Típico is a contemporary fashion brand that reinterprets cultural identity through everyday garments. Developed as a personal project, it evolved into a real-world collaboration with Venezuelan cotton brand Ovejita, resulting in a 5-piece collection distributed across 15–28 retail stores nationwide.

The launch achieved a 70% sell-through rate—considered strong performance in apparel —with over 10,000 units sold and more than $8,000 USD generated in commission revenue within six months.

The challenge

How can Venezuelan culture be turned into something you can wear without reducing it to clichés?

For millions of Venezuelans living abroad, culture becomes a way of staying connected to home. Food, expressions, places and everyday rituals carry memories that go far beyond traditional national symbols.

The challenge was to translate those emotional connections into a contemporary fashion brand — creating garments that could evoke recognition and belonging while feeling relevant, wearable and authentic.

Approach

Before deciding what Típico should look like, we needed to understand what it should represent.

Research explored fashion as a form of identity and communication, from the T-shirt as a cultural canvas to streetwear communities; alongside migration and how cultural identity is maintained through food, music, objects, language and shared experiences.

But representing Venezuelan culture couldn't rely on theory, or on my own experience, alone. Interviews and surveys with Venezuelans then helped identify the expressions, food, places and everyday moments most strongly associated with home. Rather than defining Venezuelan culture from the outside, these conversations helped identify the memories people actually shared.

From Research to Brand Strategy

The research revealed an opportunity to move beyond the traditional souvenir and create a brand rooted in shared cultural recognition.

Típico would speak primarily to Venezuelans at home and abroad, while remaining accessible to anyone interested in discovering the culture. Instead of presenting Venezuela through monuments or national symbols, the brand would focus on the experiences people recognize because they have lived them. This led to a simple core idea: exporting culture through everyday clothing.

These insights shaped the brand around three ideas, belonging, memory and recognition, creating the strategic foundation for everything that followed.

Every illustration started with something real. Rather than illustrating what simply looked Venezuelan, the collection was built around the behaviours, memories and cultural references uncovered through research.

Building the Identity

The identity was built as a flexible system capable of expanding into future collections from different countries, using a “text bubble” concept that encapsulates the expressions, memories and cultural references that define each context without relying on conventional cultural codes.

A bold wordmark, flexible colour palette and illustration-led system create a contemporary visual language where the stories remain the protagonist.

The name Típico reinforces the concept itself — referring not only to what is characteristic of a place, but to the small behaviours and expressions that make a culture instantly recognizable.

From Brand to Experience

The system expanded into a ten-piece collection across T-shirts, long sleeves, sweatshirts and hoodies, with each garment becoming a canvas for a different cultural story. We were able to turn the identity into something people could wear, share and experience.

Beyond the product, the identity extended across packaging, photography, social content and e-commerce — creating a consistent brand experience across physical and digital touchpoints.

From Concept to Market

The project became a real product. Típico caught the attention of Venezuelan cotton brand Ovejita, leading to a commercial collaboration that brought five of the original designs into production and retail.

Within six months, the collection sold over 10,000 units, achieved a 70% sell-through rate and generated more than $8,000 USD in commission revenue.

More than a commercial outcome, the collaboration validated the original idea: culturally specific stories could create recognition, emotional connection and real demand.
